In the period 24 – 27 February 2003, work was carried out at the W. de Vries Robbéweg location on behalf of Heijmans IBC Vastgoedontwikkeling. BAAC an archaeological investigation was carried out. This was a Supplementary Archaeological Investigation (AAO) with the aim of determining the nature and preservation of the soil archive. The reason for the investigation was the proposed construction of the Police District Office on the site bounded by the W. de Vries Robbéweg and the Arkelsedijk.

Only a limited amount of archaeological values were found at the research location. These were limited to one depression that started in the 14de century was gradually filled in with household waste. This led to the assumption that there must have been buildings in the vicinity. The chance of finding archaeological remains of this on the unexamined parts of the research site was small, since the soil archive appeared to have been disturbed up to a meter below the current ground level. The depression was most likely to be associated with an oval-shaped body of water, probably a wheel, that on the 16de century city map by Jacob van Deventer is depicted.

The other phenomena found during the investigation are of a natural nature, namely Linge deposits and a vegetation layer, through which the wheel cuts. Roman traces, as expected on the basis of the prospective investigation, were not found.

No follow-up research

The Additional Archaeological Investigation has shown that the archaeological values at the research location are of limited size and value. Based on this, and given the degree of disturbance of the terrain, it could be concluded that a follow-up investigation, in the form of a Definitive Archaeological Investigation (DAO) would not yield any added value.
