Spijksedijk 56
On March 26, 2009, by The Sample an Inventory Field Survey Other (IVO-O) carried out on a site at Spijksedijk 56 in Gorinchem. The archaeological research involved a field survey with desk research.
The desk research aims to arrive at a specified archaeological expectation model based on available information. The field research then aims to test the specified archaeological expectation model by means of field observations. This can answer the question of whether archaeological values are (or could be) present in the plan area and whether these require further research and/or plan adjustment.
Expectation from late Iron Age
According to the specified archaeological expectation model, the plan area has high expectations regarding the presence of archaeological remains dating from the late Iron Age. The drilling research shows that the top half to one and a half metres of the soil in the plan area was lost during the development into an industrial estate. The top layer within the industrial estate consists in most places of a one-metre thick package of brick rubble. The deposits found below this were formed in a dynamic depositional environment in which no suitable habitation conditions prevailed.
Thick clay layer
The boreholes placed at the foot of the Spijksedijk contrast sharply with the boreholes placed within the industrial estate, because these boreholes are characterised by a top layer of humus-rich, firm clay on a thick layer of basin clay that extends up to three metres below ground level.
No indicators
No archaeological indicators were found during the drilling. The results of the research do not give reason to recommend further archaeological research. Nor were any archaeological remains found during the research that should be taken into account during further planning or during the execution of the planned work. Due to the complete absence of archaeological indicators within the plan area, the KNA components Valuation and Selection Advice have not been further elaborated in this report.
