Research
On Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 August 2008, Hollandia Archaeologists commissioned by CV Bredescholenbouw Gorinchem, an inventory field study (IVO-other) in the form of drilling was carried out at Schepenenstraat 1 – 5, the location where the comprehensive school “Gildenplein” was planned.
For this purpose, two existing primary schools and a sports hall were demolished. An underground parking garage was also planned for the location. The associated earthmoving could pose a threat to the possible archaeological remains present
Soil structure
The soil consists (under a applied package) of clay on peat. Sand is present in places. Under a applied package, an intact soil was found in boreholes 4 to 10. In boreholes 1 and 2, a layer of sand was found under the applied package, of which it cannot be said with certainty whether it was natural or applied. It was not possible to drill under the sand. If the sand was applied, the soil at that location was probably partly excavated, given the depth of the top of the undisturbed soil in the other boreholes. Borehole 3 could not be deepened further than into the applied soil.
Fossil stream ridge
In borehole 5, a sand layer was drilled at 270 cm below ground level. This is probably a river deposit. The bottom of the sand layer could not be determined because the sand flowed directly from the borehole. In the other boreholes, no sand layer was found. This indicates that the sand layer is small. It is unlikely that we are dealing with the expected Arkel-Gorinchem current belt here. It may be a small breakthrough (crevasse). The boundary could not be determined. No archaeological indicators were found.
