Papland 8 – 10

In September 2017, A. de Nijs Beheer BV commissioned Transect an archaeological preliminary investigation carried out in a plan area at Papland 8 – 10. The reason for the investigation is the redevelopment of the site, in which the existing buildings will be demolished and a new parking garage will be built. An environmental permit must be applied for for this.

The proposed interventions will involve earthmoving, which could disturb the original soil and any archaeological remains present in the area. In order to allow the proposed developments to take place, an archaeological preliminary investigation is required as part of the permit application based on the zoning plan Buitenterrein en stationgebied (2016).

Low expectation

Based on the field research, it was determined that the plan area has a low archaeological expectation. No bank or crevasse deposits of the Linge or Spijk ridge were found, as would be possible based on the desk research. Only basin deposits were found, which indicate relatively wet conditions in the plan area. These are generally not habitable, which is why a low archaeological expectation of remains from the Iron Age-Late Middle Ages has been assigned. The top of the soil profile consists of a dike breach deposit, which was probably deposited in the plan area in the early Modern period. Given the sharp transition between the overtopping package and the basin deposits, erosion of the top of the basin deposits may have occurred. This will have affected any mining traces from the Late Middle Ages-Early Modern period.
