Lingsesdijk 72 – 74 (2015)

Research

In March 2015, on behalf of Inventerra by Transect BV an archaeological preliminary investigation carried out in a plan area at Lingsesdijk 72 – 74. The reason for the investigation is the planned demolition of the existing buildings and the construction of a new house and a garage.

Lingsesdijk 72-72 Gorinchem

Lingsesdijk 72 – 74

Excavations of approximately 1 m –Mv are required for the construction. The plan area is located along the Lingsesdijk, between two old river belts; the Gorkum-Arkel and the Linge. In the plan area, remains of habitation from the Mesolithic to the Early Middle Ages are expected in the top of the river dunes, donks and crevasses. Remains from the Late Middle Ages to the Modern Period can be found in raised layers along the Lingsesdijk. Based on the results of the field research, the plan area originally lay on a residual channel of the Linge. This channel has slowly filled in. It may even be a crevasse.

No historical buildings known

Habitation in this area seems unlikely for the periods prior to the Late Middle Ages, because the channel in the area probably washed away the possible archaeological remains from these periods and any habitation seems unlikely anyway given the wet location. At the height of the dike, no archaeological indicators were found in the three different raising layers for the period Late Middle Ages to the Modern Period. Given the absence of buildings on the historical maps, it is plausible that there were no historical buildings present in the plan area. The archaeological expectation for settlement traces is therefore low for all periods. The construction of the late medieval dike could be archaeologically relevant. However, this only applies if the new excavations take place deeper than the foundation of the current dike house.
