Lingewijk North (2004)

Commissioned by the municipality of Gorinchem, the research and consultancy agency for Building History, Archaeology, Architectural History and Cultural History (BAAC bv) in 2004 an Inventory Archaeological Field Research (IVO) exploratory phase was carried out for the Lingewijk-Noord plan area. 

The reason for this research was the planned housing construction with associated facilities. Soil interventions were expected, which would disrupt any archaeological values ​​that may be present.

The largest part of the research area is low-lying and therefore unsuitable for habitation. This part has a low archaeological expectation. The direct surroundings of the drilling points where possible crevasses deposits have been found has a medium-high archaeological expectation. Given the deep location of the deposits of the Gorkum-Arkel ridge, more drillings to a great depth should be carried out along the western edge of the research area in order to be able to assess this part archaeologically.

Conclusions of drilling research

The southeastern corner of the area is higher and suitable for habitation. There may still be remains of an old farm here, which according to historical sources stood here. This part of the area has a high archaeological expectation. No archaeological indicators were found (apart from two shards, which possibly originate from the above-mentioned farm) that indicate the presence of an archaeological site.

There are no known sites and/or archaeological sites from the research area. The archaeological expectation value of the area according to the IKAW and the Cultural-historical Main Structure South Holland differ greatly from each other. The expectation value according to the IKAW seems to be the most reliable, although the medium-high archaeological expectation for the northeastern corner of the area does not correspond with the low expectation of the research.

Recommendations

For the south-eastern corner of the area, where a farm once stood, construction supervision is recommended to see if any remains of this farm have been preserved. Given the fact that the largest part of the research area is unsuitable for habitation, no further research is recommended here. Although an attempt has been made to provide the most well-founded advice possible based on the research methods used, the presence of archaeological traces in the areas where no further research is recommended cannot be completely ruled out.
