GORINCHEM – During excavations at the Chalk Street in Gorinchem the very old remains of the city have been found. It concerns parts of the foundation of a noble house from the 14e century, which belonged to Jan van Arkel. Even older remains were found under the foundation, namely houses from the 13e century.
Behind the house is the archaeology working group of the municipality of Gorinchem, which works with the research agency Baac carrying out the excavations, he also came across a courtyard.
According to project leader Van Genabeek of Baac, the excavations provide insight into the residence of Jan van Arkel, a nobleman who played an important role in the history of Gorcum. The remains show how the nobility lived at that time. The house stood prominently at the front between other wooden houses. Baac and the working group have until the end of September. After that, a V&D will be built on that spot, opposite the Grote Kerk. The remains will be drawn, photographed and then removed. There will also be an exhibition.
