On March 8, 2005, Gomarus School Community BILAN was commissioned to conduct an archaeological preliminary investigation in the Schotdeuren plan area. The reason for this investigation was the planned new construction in the area. This would involve soil-disturbing activities, making an archaeological preliminary investigation necessary. This investigation consisted of a desk study supplemented with an inventory field study. The aim of the investigation was to determine the archaeological expectation of the plan area.

The desk research showed that the plan area was located just south of or just on a river belt, where habitation was possible from Roman times. A relatively large number of archaeological observations and finds have been made on this river belt. However, no archaeological finds or observations were known from the plan area itself.

No indicators found

The field research showed that the soil in the northern part of the plan area consists of a clay layer on a peat layer. The soil in the southern part of the plan area has been disturbed and probably consists of the filling of an old ditch. No indications were found in the plan area for the presence of a stream belt or artificial height. Furthermore, no archaeological indicators were found.

From the above research it can be concluded that further research on site is not necessary. However, for soil interventions in this area, the Heritage Act remains in force, which encourages that archaeological finds or structures must be reported to the competent authorities within three days.
