Research
Commissioned by Aveco de Bondt heeft ADC ArcheoProjects a desk study and an inventory field study were carried out for the plan area Banneweg 22, Rijkswaterstaat support point “De Banne” in Gorinchem. The support point was redeveloped in the plan area.
The research was carried out in the context of an application for a building permit and was necessary to determine whether the proposed activities posed a risk of damaging archaeological remains in the subsurface.
If crevasse deposits of the Schaik stream belt were present in the plan area, archaeological remains from the Neolithic could be present in them. These deposits are located within 500 cm below the surface. Archaeological remains, if present, were expected in the top of the bedding deposits and in the bank deposits.
If basin deposits were present in the plan area, then remains from the Late Middle Ages could be present in the plan area. At and directly under the ground level, archaeological remains from the Modern period were expected.
Drilling research
In order to test this expectation, a drilling survey (specification VS03) was carried out in the plan area. The bank deposits on bed deposits expected on the basis of the desk study were only found in drilling 1. In drillings 5 and 8, basin deposits were found alternating with bank deposits on bank deposits. In drillings 4 and 6, mainly basin deposits were found within which a maximum 130 cm thick package consisting of bank deposits was found. In drillings 2, 3 and 7, only basin deposits were found. In drillings 1, 4 and 8, the expected overtopping deposits on the basis of the desk study may have been found.
The archaeological expectation was based on the presence of crevasse or stream belt deposits in the subsurface. Higher sandy bed deposits were particularly attractive for habitation in the past. Such sandy deposits were only found in borehole 1. Since there was limited disturbance at the location of this borehole (only a covering was constructed here), any archaeological values present here were not directly threatened.
In boreholes 4, 5, 6 and 8 a combination of bank and basin deposits was found. These boreholes were probably placed on the edge of a bank. Based on the absence of sandy bed deposits it was concluded that this area was less suitable for habitation in the past.
ADC ArcheoProjecten advised to release the site for the proposed development. However, it cannot be completely ruled out that archaeological remains still exist near the investigated area.
