Summary:
In 1954, Gorinchem received a secret design for a military bridge over the Merwede River, intended for rapid troop movements during the Cold War. The NATO bridge was tested in 1958 but lost its function when the permanent Merwede Bridge opened in 1961. The concrete pillars of the military bridge remained.
Earlier, in 1917, pontoon builders had built a 938-meter-long pontoon bridge between Sleeuwijk and Gorinchem as a practice project. The Merwede Bridge itself, designed by W.J. van der Eb, has two 170-meter arches and was constructed by De Vries Robbé in Gorinchem. This road bridge was part of the 1927 National Road Plan and formed the long-awaited north-south connection of the A27 motorway.
