During the Golden Age, the Dutch Republic experienced a large influx of immigrants, particularly from the Southern Netherlands after the fall of Antwerp in 1585. An estimated 1600 foreigners settled in the Republic between 1800 and 600.000, originating from countries including France, Germany, Poland, and England. These immigrants contributed significantly to the Republic's prosperity by boosting industry, education, and the arts. Compared to cities like Amsterdam, Leiden, and Haarlem, Gorinchem experienced more limited immigration. Nevertheless, the population here also grew due to the arrival of newcomers, although the increase was less explosive than in other Dutch cities.
