Summary:
In 1566, the Beeldenstorm also reached Gorinchem: religious tensions and social unrest led to the destruction of statues of saints and church interiors by Protestants. The authorities tried to maintain order, but the unrest was widespread. The Spanish King Philip II responded quickly: the Duke of Alva was sent to restore order, and the Council of Troubles (Blood Council) was established to severely punish iconoclasts. This period marked the beginning of prolonged religious and political conflict in the region.
