Summary:
The Martyrs of Gorcum are nineteen Catholic clergymen who were captured by the Sea Beggars in Gorinchem in 1572 during the Eighty Years' War and taken to Den Briel. Because they refused to renounce their Catholic faith, specifically their loyalty to the Pope and faith in the Eucharist, they were tortured and hanged on July 9, 1572, in a peat barn near Den Briel. This event marks a dark chapter in Dutch history. The martyrs were beatified in 1675 and canonized in 1867. Their story symbolizes the struggle for religious freedom and is commemorated annually with pilgrimages.
