Summary:
During the night of July 8-9, 1572, nineteen Roman Catholic clergy were brutally hanged by Lumey and his men in a peat barn near Den Briel. The clergy, originally from Gorinchem and the surrounding area, had fled to the castle "De Blauwe Toren" (The Blue Tower) but were captured there. Despite orders from William of Orange to spare them, they were brought to Den Briel and tortured into renouncing their faith. Loyal to the Pope and the sacrament of the Eucharist, most refused and were sentenced to death. Their steadfastness in the faith later made them known as the Martyrs of Gorcum, who were canonized in the nineteenth century.
