In October 2003, BILAN carried out an archaeological preliminary investigation on behalf of the municipality of Gorinchem Grote Haarsekade in Gorinchem. The reason for the investigation was the establishment of an industrial estate in the area.

The aim of the research was to determine the archaeological values ​​of the area and to formulate recommendations for possible follow-up research. This preliminary research consisted of a desk study and an inventory field study in which 14 boreholes were placed.

The plan area includes bowl grounds, with soil type polder vague soils, located south of the Spijkse current belt. On this current belt many Roman and medieval observations have been made. The desk research showed a low to medium archaeological expectation for the plan area.

No follow-up research

The drilling investigation could not confirm this expectation. The area was low-lying, consisted entirely of basin clay and the top layer was completely disturbed to a maximum depth of 80 cm -mv. Some archaeological indicators, such as industrial white goods, were found in and just below the disturbed top layer. Based on the results of the drilling investigation, no further investigation was recommended.
