Cellar with bricked-up staircase
From July 30 to August 2, 2007, Hollandia Archeology a number of test trenches were dug, followed by a definitive investigation from 24 September to 4 October 2007. The reason for the investigation was the plan to demolish the existing buildings and replace them with a building to house a healthcare institution.
Cellars and cesspools
The location has a long history of habitation. The Kortendijk is located on a riverbank along the Linge and is one of the oldest residential axes of the city of Gorinchem. During this research, traces of habitation were found from the Late Middle Ages up to and including the Modern Period. The earliest traces date from the 14e century and the location has probably been continuously inhabited since then. Older traces are also expected at a deeper level. However, the flat-covering investigation was limited to a depth of approximately 1 m to 1,3 m below ground level, with the exception of deep traces, such as cesspits, which have been completely excavated. Six borings were made into the (presumably) natural subsoil, which consists of grey clay. This lies at a depth of 2,75 m to 4,6 m below ground level. A number of raised layers from different periods of habitation and raising of the dike lie on top of this. The remains found consisted of many walls and foundations of houses from different periods, with associated (water) cellars and a total of eight waste and cesspits. There was little disturbance. Intact remains were found on some parts of the site from 0,2 m below ground level.

Finds
The preservation conditions for the various material categories were found to be good. The majority of the finds consist of pottery from the 14de to the 19de century. Special features include the discovery of an incomplete stoneware statue of Mary (Siegburg) from the 14th century.de-15de century, a pot of an unknown type of grey-fired earthenware (1375-1425), a candlestick of red-fired earthenware with lead glaze (1750-1850) and part of a leather jerkin. A remarkable number of coin weights were found in one of the cesspits.
