Research
Tuesday October 10, 2017 started Transect BV an archaeological investigation on Hazewindhondstraat 6. After foundations of 17th century buildings and an 18th century waterway had been discovered, part of the medieval fortress wall was also exposed.
Medieval wall
On the map of Jacob van Deventer from 1558 it seems as if the current buildings were partly placed on the moat that was filled in the 16th century and that the old fortress wall was located more to the east on the street side. Further research now proves that the current quay wall on the Schuttersgracht (still visible!) is part of this 14th century fortress wall and that the original building lines have been changed over time.
Fortress tower
The same map by Van Deventer shows a small tower at the western end of the Ariën Brandsteeg. Unfortunately, it now appears that this was demolished to the ground during the western expansion of the city at the end of the 16th century. Thanks to the still present traces of demolition, we are however able to locate the exact location of this former fortress tower.
The plots have already been Hazewindhondstraat 8-10 (2015) investigated. Then too, the 14th century fortress wall was encountered.
New homes
After completion of the research, Gorinchem Urban Restoration Foundation with the construction of a number of new homes at this location.
