Achter de Kerk-Groenmarkt (2017)
Tuesday November 7, 2017 started Hollandia Archaeologists from Zaandijk with an excavation of the former cemetery in the area Achter de Kerk-Groenmarkt. The research was necessary in connection with the planting of four lime trees at this location as part of the redevelopment of this area.
Cemetery
As in many villages and towns, the church was the centre of the settlement. In 1263 a Saint Martin consecrated church was put into use. The tower was badly damaged in a storm in 1361 and was replaced by the current tower, which was built between 1450 and 1517. It is possible that the deceased were buried on the consecrated ground around the church building from the time the first church in Gorcum was built.

Dozens of skeletons
A total of 95 graves were found. All skeletons were carefully recovered, after which an extensive physical anthropological investigation will take place. Excavating, documenting and analyzing human skeletal material is a time-consuming task. The final results were therefore only available several years later.
Earlier during research Behind the Church in 2008 53 individuals were recovered and extensively examined.
